Spearfishing Gear
There are a few different items when it comes to Spearfishing Gear, but these will usually last a lifetime (except for a few consumables like rubbers, mono line and even the spears). Spearfishing can either be done by free diving or with scuba tanks. If you are free diving you just hold your breath while you dive down and take your shot. With scuba tanks you have the luxury of taking your time a bit more, but fish are often scared off by the bubbles that you breath out and you are not allowed to spearfish in every location using a scuba tank, as it becomes too easy to get fish. In fact, many free divers think that scuba diving and spear fishing is simply cheating, and it is correct in a way.
Your basic Spearfishing Gear starts with a snorkeling set and a speargun. A float is also very important if you are going for anything much bigger than an arm’s length! You can start off with a very basic set of snorkeling gear, and then get better fins and wetsuits as you progress and decide that you love the sport. The options for snorkeling gear are simply huge, and you won’t have any problems finding something that you want! I think that Spearfishing Wetsuits are one of the most important parts of diving.
Snorkeling Gear
Snorkeling gear includes fins, a wetsuit (although you may not need one if you live in an area with warmer water!), a mask, snorkel and a weight belt. Weight Belts are vital for helping you sink down, otherwise you will find that when you go down underwater you will rise quickly, and it’s very hard to shoot a fish when you are moving! The correct weight for spearfishing is to sink when you breath out completely, and float well if you hold your breath.
Spearfishing Gear ranges from low quality right through to thousand dollar items which you want to take a lot of care with! I would suggest a good wetsuit is well worth it, as there is nothing worse than being cold when you are diving. Fins are the most important item when it comes to moving efficiently underwater, and you can spend several hundred dollars on these if you choose!
A speargun and float
Spearfishing Gear itself only includes a speargun and a float. The Spearguns can be either air powered or rubber powered, depending on where you are going spearfishing. If you are going for any decent sized fish you really want a float too. What this does is stops you from losing your gun, as even small fish have the ability to fight really hard if you hit them wrongly. A float is made of either foam or inflated plastic, and it simply floats behind you. A rope attaches to the speargun, and when you shoot a big fish you are able to let the gun go. The float is pulled around until the fish is tired and then you can pull it in. If you do get a fish, you can put the fish on the float line and slide it backwards.
This means that if a shark comes it will eat the fish which dangles 30 meters away, rather than attacking yourself! The best option though is simply to get the fish out of the water as quickly as possible, and to try to stop it bleeding a lot!
Spearfishing Gear doesn’t have to cost the earth, and when you use it regularly over a period of a few years it will save you a lot of money. When you consider the massive cost of bait, lures, fishing line, fishing rods and reels, Spearfishing Gear is a bargain!
