Blue Water Hunter

A Blue Water Hunter is a name given to those that go spearfishing in deeper water. This is usually where you get larger fish (usually well over a meter long) and where the water depth is usually over 15 meters deep. This is usually a part of spearfishing which is done by those with decent sets of Spearfishing Gear and who have a lot of skill and training. It’s deep water which causes a lot of issues with those that don’t know what they are doing. It is a very rewarding part of spearfishing, but if you aren’t safe with how you do it then you will find that you lose a lot more than what you gain!

A Blue Water Hunter is usually set up with different Spearfishing Gear than a spear fisher that sticks to shallower water. For example, the fins that you want when trying to dive to deep parts of the ocean are usually very long (sometimes up to and over a meter long) and they are usually very expensive. Masks need to be smaller to enable easier equalization, wetsuits need to be warmer and then of course the biggest change is the set up with the Spearfishing Float and the Gun.

There is quite a bit of deep water not too far from the shore, so a Blue Water Hunter may enter in from the shore or from the boat, depending on what they are doing. Obviously diving from a boat is usually easier, but it is more expensive and not everyone has access to one. Using a boat means that if you shoot a fish you can throw it straight in the boat and you don’t have to swim around with a fish dangling off the float. It also means that you don’t have to swim as much, as you can motor around. The average Blue Water Hunter who goes spearfishing from the boat will use a reel on their gun as a pose to a float, but it depends on what they are trying to shoot – in the case of fish larger than a few meters you would struggle to keep them with just a reel!

A Blue Hunter Wetsuit is designed specifically to blend in with the back ground. As a result, these Spearfishing Wetsuits are built with camouflaged colors (usually different shades of blue). This helps to stop the fish getting scared of you when you swim around, as many of the bigger fish are very wary of humans diving! These wetsuits look good, but you want to get something which is going to keep you warm at all times; there is nothing worse than diving when you are freezing!

The biggest change for a Blue Water Hunter though is not the wetsuit; it’s the gun. If you are going for huge fish the guns that are used are usually rail guns made out of wood. As a minimum two big rubbers are used, but some guns use up to and over 16! This gives a massive range, enabling you to comfortably take out huge fish. Sometimes several floats are used, and the spear is often attached to the float rather than the gun. A Blue Water Hunter has a lot of fun, but instead of getting lots of smaller fish you get one or two huge ones!
